  • Sushi Rice:
    • 2 cups sushi or short-grain rice
    • 2 1/2 cups water
    • 1/2 cup rice vinegar
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 1 tsp salt
  • Fillings:
    • Fresh fish (salmon, tuna), thinly sliced
    • Cucumber, julienne cut
    • Avocado, sliced
    • Cream cheese (optional)
    • Cooked shrimp or crab meat
  • Additional:
    • Nori (seaweed sheets)
    • Soy sauce for dipping
    • Pickled ginger
    • Wasabi
  • Equipment:
    • Bamboo sushi mat
    • Sharp knife

Step 1: Prepare the Sushi Rice

  1. Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear, then drain.
  2. Cook the rice in water, following your rice cooker’s instructions, or on the stove.
  3. While the rice cooks, heat the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small pan until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Spread the cooked rice into a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture, allowing it to cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Prepare the Fillings

  1. Slice the fish, cucumber, avocado, and any other fillings into thin strips.

Step 3: Rolling the Sushi

  1. Lay a sheet of nori on the bamboo mat.
  2. With wet hands, spread a thin layer of rice onto the nori, leaving a small border at the top.
  3. Arrange your chosen fillings in a line at the bottom of the rice.
  4. Gently roll the sushi using the mat, pressing lightly to keep it tight.

Step 4: Cutting the Sushi

  1. With a sharp, wet knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces.

Step 5: Serving

  1. Serve the sushi with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and a small amount of wasabi.

Tips for Perfect Sushi:

  • Rice is Key: The rice should be sticky but not mushy.
  • Freshness Counts: Use the freshest fish you can find, ideally from a trusted source.
  • Be Creative: Feel free to experiment with different fillings.
  • Presentation: Arrange your sushi neatly on a platter to enhance the visual appeal.
